SMAD. An Organ of Student Opinion. 1936. Volume 7. Number 18.

"Smad" Bows

"Smad" Bows.

"The leaves of life keep falling one by one; the wine of youth keeps oozing drop by drop,"

The Seventh Volume of "Smad" has now been written and another year has come and gone.

Before summarising briefly the outstanding events of the year, we should like to wish success to our readers who in an academic aspect are now, perhaps, reaching the critical period of 1936 and we feel confident if they adopt the watchword of Bismarck, "Work, Work, Work," they must succeed.

1936 will probably go down in memory for a lamentably weak procession with an unjustified and unfair press attack and a consequent ban inflicted as a result of such press publicity; and a general apathy insidiously affecting College life in many of its expressive forms though dispelled to some extent by later action of the Dramatic and Debating Societies.

The College is still without its settled rules for a Plunket Medal oration, its procession, its cricket coach, and its Gym. These improvements must and will come in time and true to its policy, "Smad" will endeavour to expedite them.

The Staff of "Smad" would like to convey to all contributors their personal appreciation and thanks and in particular to acknowledge their indebtendness for that excellent "Nutshell Knowledge" series to "Spectator," whose peroration in this issue should be read by everyone.

The Editor further wishes to acknowledge and to thank the remainder of the staff for the zeal, energy and initiative they have always displayed in the arduous task of producing a newspaper.
