Kevin O'Brien

Kevin O'Brien, a part-time student, has an M.Com. and is now doing an Arts course. He has been Secretary of the Association since last July and is this year's Extrav Organizer. He is also Secretary of the Building Appeal Committee, and chairman of the Stud. Ass. Jubilee Celebration Committee. Treasurer of N.Z.U.S.A. he was its acting secretary early this year and has been appointed Organizer of the Debating Tour from Australia. He is President of the Debating Society, has been Business Manager of Salient and a member of various special committees mainly those concerned with financial questions such as the two in 1947. He was on the original VUC Exam Fees Committee and acted as Financial Adviser to NZUSA in their successful negotiations for reduction of fees in 1946. He has won the Debating Society's Plunket Medal, Union. Prize and New Speakers Prize, and has represented VUC in both Oratory and Debating at NZU contests.

He believes that the main job of the Executive elected now is to conclude the Association's affairs for the current year satisfactorily. He supports maximum co-operation with NZUSA projects, e.g., Congress, and believes in the necessity of student representation on the Senate. He thinks that delegation of specialized work to committees such as the New Music Committee, as well as the consolidation of the administrative charges of recent years will help in giving the Executive the time really necessary to consider important policy issues, while he regards an improved Public Relations policy an essential.
