The Founders of Canterbury

To the Same

page 235

To the Same.

Reigate, 20th March, 1850.

I think the advertisement would be much improved by adding after the word "value," the following sentence:—

"The colonial enterprise here indicated demands ability, sense, and energy, no less than the motives of ambition and honour."

I feel sure that unless a name of some mark appear, the advertisement will be deemed a hoax, or nonsense, or a mere decoy to opinion—not a reality. As a reality it is a capital puff of Canterbury. Lots of rascals will answer it; all sorts of scum and dregs; but it is not unlikely to send a dozen first-rate colonists to join Godley.

A banker's name is the best to appear.
