A Statute Title. To Define The Duties Of Churchwardens And Vestrymen.


1.Duties of Churchwardens.
2.Duties of Vestrymen.
Whereas in Statute 4 of the General Synod, Preamble. passed by the General Synod 22nd February, 1862, provision is made, that the Synod of each Diocese shall define the powers and duties of the Vestrymen and Churchwardens respectively.

Be it resolved by the Bishop, Clergy, and Laity of the Diocese of Waiapu, in Synod assembled, as follows:—

1.The following shall be the duties of the Duties of Churchwardens. Churchwardens;
(1.)To take care that Divine Service be conducted with decency and order, and to check anything which may cause disturbance.
(2.)To take care that all things requisite for the orderly performance of Divine Service are procured by the aid of the Vestry.
(3.)To take care, with the assistance of the Vestry, that suitable books are provided for the page 56Parochial Records, and that proper measures be adopted for their safe custody.
(4.)To collect the Offertory, to attest after each service in a book, with the officiating Clergyman, the amount collected, and the object of any special collection, and to pay such monies to the objects specified.
(5.)To bring to the notice of the Clergyman any matters requiring his attention, and generally to promote the welfare of the Church in his Parish.
(6.)To enter in a book the names of the Church Members in his Parish, distinguishing the names of those who are qualified to vote in the election of Synodsmen.
(7.)In case of the death of the Clergyman of the Parish, to report the vacancy to the Bishop.
(8.)To see that the fabric of the Church, and all things connected therewith, are kept in repair.
2.Duties of Vestrymen. The following shall be the duties of the Vestry;
(1.) To assist the Churchwardens in the collection of contributions for Church purposes, and to keep the accounts of the Parish.
(2.) To obtain from the Parish all requisite contributions for the support of the Clergyman.
(3.) To present their account yearly to the Clergyman, Churchwardens, and Parishioners; and to transmit the audited account to the Bishop or his Commissary.
