The Tanks: An Unofficial History of the Activities of the Third New Zealand Division Tank Squadron in the Pacific

A Plane to our Credit

A Plane to our Credit

Returning to the camp, after collecting rations, Jim Lees, in the front of the truck, and 'Choom' Feather, standing on the back, had a novel experience. Held up for a short time waiting for fighter planes to land, they were given the 'all clear' by the provost on duty, and the truck started along the airstrip following the planes which had just landed. Suddenly, there was a terrific bang and the driver swerved over. A Corsair fighter had tried to climb the back of the truck. Jim, very worried, stopped the truck and looked for 'Choom,' but he was not on the back of the truck. Looking back, he saw him getting up from the ground. 'Choom' had just managed to jump in time, otherwise the propeller would have got him. The rations were thrown about, but luckily nobody was injured. An explanation by 'Choom' was given, but nobody could understand him ordinarily, whereas at this time, he was excited! 'Choom' almost lost his 'block.'
