Air Raid Alert
Air Raid Alert
During manœuvres, whilst the fighting troops were tackling the imaginary foe in the forward area, B echelon and reinforcements were down on the beach near the Kukum Finger Pier. In order to test how quickly the vehicles would disperse, a mock air raid alarm was sounded. 'Fly' Wallace heard it and sprang into his tank and careered up the beach as fast as he could go. He stayed inside the driver's compartment for a while, and then, seeing an American soldier pass, called out:—
'Is the air raid over yet, mate?'
For the first time on record, 'Fly' was fooled.
