Employed in the Third Divisional Signals Q branch, he rose to the rank of staff-sergeant before returning to New Zealand. After being appointed RQMS. with the rank of warrant-officer, 2nd class, he saw further service in New Caledonia and Guadalcanal. Ill-health necessitated his return to New Caledonia in December 1943, and in the following June he returned to New Zealand.
