Preface

The chief purpose of this book is to record, in as true perspective as possible, the deeds of the Auckland Mounted Rifles Regiment in the Gallipoli and Sinai-Palestine Campaigns. At the same time an effort has been made to reveal something of the spirit of the Regiment, something of the general attitude of mind of its officers and men, which, at times, may have helped it to engage in operations, forlorn hopes and adventures, with the resolution generally associated with regiments with traditions.

The writer begs to acknowledge the assistance at all times given freely by those consulted, and to those who made photographs available for reproduction. Owing to the fact that in the Regiment there was almost community ownership over films and plates, it has been found impossible to state the photographer's name at the bottom of each picture, but among those who obtained many of the finest views are Captain A. Carr, Lieutenant A Briscoe Moore, and Lieutenant H. K. Hatrick. Others who placed their collections at the disposal of the Committee are Major F. Waite, D.S.O., Captain C. V. Bigg-Wither, Lieutenant S. C. Reid, M.C., Lieu-tenant E. Foley, Captain D'Esterre, and Mr. John Houston.
