The Spike [or Victoria University College Review 1954]

Photographic Club

Photographic Club

During the last five years the Photographic Club has not been idle. Up to the beginning of 1953, however, the club existed only as a cultural club because of the fact that it had no home, no darkroom. Thus the club's activities were confined to talks and an occasional competition. A move was initiated to build a darkroom in a Weir House basement but this never came about. In 1953, with the assistance of the Registrar, we obtained permission to erect a hut on College property. We bought an army hut as soon as possible and since then we have worked page 87 rapidly converting the hut into a convenient darkroom. Electricity has been connected by the College and the Registrar has assured the club that water and drainage will be laid on as soon as the club is ready for it.

In conjunction with the all-out effort for the darkroom, the club in 1953 began a series of practical demonstrations for members; although attendance has fluctuated somewhat, these demonstrations have proved a very popular feature of the club's activities.

The club provided the photographing for the Association election in 1953 and 1954. It is intended to run a copying (reflex printing) and photographing service for advanced students. The club hopes that this and similar services will finance the club, apart from the initial capital outlay.

Of particular interest in 1953 was a visit by Mr. O. A. E. Hughes, of the National Film Unit. Mr. Hughes, who is in charge of the colour department, directed the Royal Tour film.
