The New Phoenix Club Meets

The New Phoenix Club Meets.

In the absence of Mr. R. G. Tosswill, Mr. R. O'Reilly was in the chair for the first annual meeting of the Phoenix Club on Wednesday night.

The provisional committee had drawn up a constitution, the provisions of which were considered and amended with much lively discussion by the meeting.

The following programme was decided on:—
1.To hold regular meetings at which one or more papers will be read and afterwards discussed.
2.When desirable, to arrange for informal meetings for the study of examples of the arts, for gramophone recitals, exhibitions and excursions.
3.To have any original compositions coming within the scope of the club's actitivies constructively criticised for their authors and recommended, where suitable, for publication by "Smad," "Spike," and such other journals as the committee may think fit.
4.To approach "Smad" with the object of contributing critical reviews of art, emphasising films and dramatic arts.
5.To encourage the reading at weekly meetings not only of papers but of original plays which the club will make every endeavour to exploit on behalf of their authors (e.g., radio broadcasting).

On Tuesday the 6th April, arrangements have been made for a meeting at which Professor Shelley has been asked to speak.
