Athletics

Athletics.

Owing to had weather which kept the other athletic clubs from competing before the end of January, 'Varsity was read to turn out as soon as anybody, thus constituting a record. But we had not been doing nothing, so to speak, because early in the season the previous and the present Club Captains, viz., Stan Eade and Tom Birks, gave a social evening and saveloy supper at which the guest of honour, Mr. McCormick, delivered a first-hand talk on New Zealand's famed representative, Jack Lovelock. New members were welcomed and the evening was such a success that there is hope of holding another and inviting the Olympic Games starter, Dorrie Leslie, to attend and relate some of his experiences.

Further activities of the Club have been two Club meetings, much postponed on account of rain, at which members have had a good chance of obtaining competitive experience. Results of these meetings are as follows:—

Club Meeting held on Monday, 22nd January, 1937:
  • 50 Yards: H. G. Bowyer, E. D. Clarke, R. Freeman.
  • 300 Yards: H. G. Bowyer, E. D. Clarke, A. H. Gorringe.
  • 600 Yards: L. S. Black. A. A. Congalton, W. J. Newall.
  • 100 Yards: H. G. Bowyer, A. H. Gorringe, H. Arnold.
  • 1000 Yards: L. S. Black, T. A. Rafter, W. R. Birks.
  • 300 Yards: H. G. Bowyer, A. H. Gorringe.
  • Discus: C. R. Stephenson, F. Fortune, M. Mason.

At the end of last year we lost Phil Bowie, one of the best athletes the Club has had, who was transferred to Auckland where he is producing excellent times. However, a number of our members are shaping nicely now and we are glad to congratulate Lin Black on winning a place in the Provincial Team against Canterbury.

At the first Dewar Shield meeting 'Varsity did not enter in the Grand Parade, but was represented at the second meeting, on which occasion Mr. Kitto declared the parade 100 per cent. better. The lads in the green and gold blushed becomingly but were unable to deny the truth of this. 'Varsity gained second place for the Shield and was followed by a string of Clubs whose combined score only came to within half a point of ours. Nevertheless, the Club badly needs fields events men, and is big enough to train them. So all physically sound men with aspirations for Tournament honours are urged to come and make friends at the next Saveloy Supper, not to mention the training nights on Kelburn Park, 5 p.m. onward every week night.

And don't forget, Interfaculty Sports on Saturday week!
