SMAD. An Organ of Student Opinion. 1936. Volume 7. Number 14.

Lead Them By The Ears

Lead Them By The Ears

Dear "Smad,"—

I read "Smad's" article, "Apathy and the Student," with enthusiasm and trust that this is merely the initial step in a campaign against University Unconsciousness. Unless this mounting wave of apathy is checked here and now, student activities will cease to be merely pitiful as at present and become frankly ridiculous. You speak of "the right" to run our own affairs. A noble thought, but it seems to me that "duty" and "responsibility are the terms that should now be uses-and as truculently as possible!

Obviously, the appeals of past Executives and others to that nonexistent thing, "College Spirit," have fallen on deaf ears. The attendance figures for the Annual General Meeting are a pretty sound indication that the great majority of students wash their hands of any personal responsibility for the public affairs of V.U.C. I would like to suggest, therefore, that the new Executive consider the question of holding regular monthly general meetings, attendance to be compulsory on the whole student body

Doubtless this question of compulsory attendance could be arranged with the University authorities. I am confident that the indignation and opposition aroused by such enforced attendance would create more positive interest in student affairs in one month than a year of goodwill appeals or tactful advertisement.

I am aware, Sir, that this is a disgraceful proposal, but V.U.C. is fast falling into a disgraceful condition.

I am, etc.,

Compulsory.
