Harrier Club

Harrier Club.

Recent weeks have found the Harrier weeks have found the Harrier Club setting in to racing stride. Horsley's win in the Novice Race was followed by fastest time in the Sherwood Cup, when he defeated, with apparent ease, Cairns, Scrymgeour and Bagnall. These are both comparatively short races, but for such as doubt Horsley's ability over a longer stretch, his Dorne Cup performance (18th man home, 2nd of V.U.C. team) must be quoted. The Dorne (5 miles) saw D. Cairns give his finest race so far, when he stayed close to the forefront of the province's runners and finished in seventh place. This runner is training more consistently than previously and may rank highly when provincial honours are considered.

D. Scrymeoug, who set the rapid initial pace in the Sherwood, is a man of whom better performances will be expected later, while O'Connor, Bagnall and Porter would be more reliable men with close attention to training.

Gabites, winner of the Sherwood Handicap, is a steady runner of the type from which teams are made.

The toughest run of the season was the mystery "point to point," Karori to Island Bay; being variations on a theme of hills, bracken, gorse and driven rain, with hot baths and a fine afternoon tea as finale. Any more bright ideas, Mr. Viggers?

On Saturday the annual six and a-quarter mile handicap race was held at Karori. Although the race itself was poilt through several runner following the Presbyterian Club's trail which crossed ours in Wilton's Road, all nevertheless had a pleasant outing.

F. King was first home, after going slightly astray, and he was followed by D. Viggers, Miller and McLean, all of whom ran well, especially Viggers, who had also been out earlier to lay the trail. The diversity of courses taken naturally affected the times considerably.

The method of determining the Club champion was exhaustively discussed after the race and it was decided to adopt a new system whereby only club races were to be taken into consideration.

The Club will next Saturday be inaugurating a Vistiror's pack, catering specially for anyone who has a spare Saturday and wished to keep fit, and the run will be from Eastbourne towards Pencarrow.
