Stonemasonry.
The grievous griffins leer from sightless eyes,
Heed not the clamour (for they cannot hear)
Nor shake their wings that never knew the skies.
No shrill cry of dismay escapes their queer
But voiceless bills in protest against Fate
That scaled them there in gaudy irony.
Gruesomely tinted, ranged in dreary state.
Prisoned and caged as if for felony,
Yet have they won the mastery of men:
Though each be vanquisht, each immured again,
Still they will snatch away the victory
They are beyond man's power and ever were.
Pierced with undying scorn, they will not stir
From their contemptuous serenity.
