Boxing

Boxing.

"Thrice is he armed who hath his quarrel just,
Six times is he who gets his blow in fust.'

Adapted.

As p. departure from previous years, and as a trial—a trial indeed for some—classes were instituted for the second term. We had the services of Mr. E. Stewart, the well-known referee, in an honorary capacity, and Mr. Tim Tracy.

Classes were very well attended for the first two evenings—auguring well for better competition and a consequent raising of the standard of V.U.C. boxing. Ever optimistic, we allowed this to cast a roseate hue on our chances for the Boxing Shield next tournament. The attendances fell off with dramatic suddenness. Perhaps most of the absentees are to be excused when only two members of the Boxing Executive ever put in an appearance at classes, in the endeavour to work up some enthusiasm in the sport. It was due to this lack of support of the Executive, men who had pledged themselves, by accepting office, to advance the interests of our boxing, that the series of contests which were proposed earlier in the year, did not eventuate. "Deeds, not words," should be the slogan of anyone who has the interests of V.U.C. at heart.

Those who took an active interest have cause to rejoice in the fact that Mr. Stewart assures us that one building champion has been unearthed from the ranks of our new men, and two very likely ones. These men, incidentally, are the ones who were constant attenders. Their example should be emulated by older members who complain about the lack of Varsity spirit, when they never take part or show an interest in V.U.C. activities. We deserve interest only when we invest our enthusiasm.

We trust the above will be taken in the spirit in which it is written—the desire to stimulate interest in "the noble art" and to see that our Boxing representatives will bring the shield to V.U.C. next Easter.

Classes will be resumed after the long vacation. It is to be hoped that increased interest will be shown, and that those who aspire to higher honours at Easter will keep in light training during the holidays.
