Swimming Club.

Since the operations of this Club are necessarily confined to the Long Vacation, there is nothing to report concerning its achievements in this issue of the Spike, but a few words as to the coming season are in place.

Although most secondary schools foster swimming and turn out good swimmers, whatever taste for the sport that may have been encouraged seems to depart when students enter upon a University career. The object of the V.C.A.S.C. is (inter alia) to encourage such students to follow up the sport. There are many obstacles in the way of such a club as this, chiefly the departure of many students from Wellington during the swimming season, but even so, there are many enthusiasts left who only need encouragement.

This season will introduce the first competition for the Aston Memorial Cup, for the winner of most points in a series of scratch races, and this should invite our best talent to see the light of clay. At frequent intervals club races are held over various distances, and the social side of the Club is provided for by water-picnics. Club races are held on week days after 5 p.m., and so do not interfere with other sports.

The coming summer promises to be an early one, consequently there is every reason to expect an excellent swimming season,
