The Spike or Victoria College Review, June 1905

Irwin Meacham Batham

Irwin Meacham Batham

Died at Khandallah, Wellington

Irwin Batham was educated at the old Cathedral School and Christ's College, Christchurch, and at Wellington College. He became a law student at Victoria College in 1901, and for several years was one of the most enthusiastic members of the Tennis and Hockey Clubs. He was a member of the First Eleven of the latter Club in its first year. Leaving Victoria College to join a legal firm in Gisborne, he was attacked by pleurisy, and by neglecting his health, sowed the seeds of the illness which proved fatal. He was devoted to principle and possessed a resolution and courage which enabled him to endure the greatest suffering with calm and characteristic fortitude. He was quiet and reserved in disposition, had a clear and critical head, a kindly heart, and a clean mind.
