Glee Club

"What harmony is this? My good friends, hark! Marvellous sweet music."

Tempest.

WITH the approach of the Carnival, the Glee Club has again come to life. It has generally happened in the past that it has flourished exceedingly for about three weeks and has then sunk into obscurity to come forth to charm students on very rare occasions only.

During the past year, really its first, the club has had a very fair amount of success, though the lack of voices, both male and female, has somewhat marred the rendering of the glees selected. To remedy this sad state of affairs, the secretary has been seriously considering the advisability of addressing a circular letter to all football and hockey teams and their "barrackers," and in the college, setting out the advantages of joining, and so having

*"Their savage eyes turned to a modest gaze

By the sweet power of music."

The club, like others, has suffered, till now in silence, from the attentions of those who are only too happy to criticise, but will do nothing to help. They have always been most kind in pointing out defects in the singing, but unfortunately their kindness has in too many cases stopped just there. The club might feel under more of an obligation if those, who did not think the page 46 performances had reached the high level expected of a college club, would give it the benefit of their assistance; perhaps it needs criticism, but it needs help more.

During the year, the Club gave performances on several occasions. Two concerts were given at the Missions to Seamen, and the Club also gave one at the Army Barracks; the latter appeared to prove very acceptable. One of the most successful items was a Maori haka danced by some dozen students in full war paint and feathers. The warriors spent most of the night thereafter in endeavouring to remove the aforesaid paint.

We also materially assisted in the College functions during last year and this. Practice of the songs for Capping Day is now proceeding vigorously, but we still want more singers. Every student who wishes to serve in the good cause is invited to Roll Up.

* We think the secretary should select his quotations with more care. We have warned him that the Ladies' Hockey Team may consider this libellous.
