Translation.

1857. 9 April.Poverty Bay District.Hearken all people. This is a giving up by us the family of Taupara of the land hereinafter described the plan whereof is shewn hereon to the Queen of England so that she may Grant it to the Bishop of this part of New Zealand to the Minister of Waerengahika to the Maori teacher of Waerengahika and to other Maoris of the family of Tuapara two or more in number to be kept and looked after by them as a permanent Waerengahika. place of residence for the Minister and a place for the Maori school to be conducted Boundaries. in accordance with the rules of the Church of England. Now, these are the boundaries of the place: Hurikitahawai thence to Otarewa including the bush but only that portion of it along the bank of Makakahi thence to Te Umuinanga to Tutaenui thence to a solitary Kahika at Motumanawai thence to Te Mataaniho thence it is marked off to Huritahawai.

Dated at Waerengahika the 9th day of April One thousand eight hundred and fifty seven.

Endorsement.

1859. 23 November. This is a withdrawal by us of some of the words written on the back hereof that is to say that portion where it states: "She may Grant it to the Bishop of this portion of New Zealand to the Minister of Waerengahika to the Native teacher of Waerengahika and to other Maoris of the family of Taupara two or more in number to be kept and looked after by them as a permanent place of residence for the Minister and as a place for the Maori school to be conducted in accordance with the rules of the Church of England." In lieu thereof these words should be inserted: That she may Grant it to William, Bishop of Waiapu and to the Bishops of this portion of New Zealand who may succeed him to be kept and looked after by him as a permanent place of residence for the Ministers and a place for the school for the Maoris to be conducted in accordance with the rules of the Church of England and Ireland that he may hand it over when the matters are done which will justify him in doing so to some persons to be appointed as Trustees by the General Synod of the Church of England & Ireland in New Zealand or persons appointed under the authority of the said Synod to keep and look after it (the land) according to the provisions above set forth. Some of the Trustees are to be of the family of Taupara.

We have hereunto affixed our names this twenty third day of November in the year one thousand eight hundred and fifty nine at Waerengahika.
