This is an agreement between the Maori people whose names are hereunto affixed 1873 19 December. Poverty Bay District. for themselves their relatives and their hapus of the one part and John A. Wilson Land Purchase Commissioner acting on behalf of the Government on the other part. The said Maori people whose names are hereunto affixed do hereby agree te lease to the said Waikohumatawai. page 708John Wilson acting on behalf of the Government all their land in the District of Waikohu-Matawai for the term of Twenty-five years. The boundaries of the said land commence at Tawakahutia from thence it proceeds along the boundary line of the land Agreement to lease. that is leased to Europeans till it reaches Orewha from thence it turns off to Waikohu Boundaries. [43,479 acres.] till it reaches the mouth of the Rangiriri follows the course of the Rangiriri till it reaches the confiscated boundary of the Government at Ukua turns off and along the confiscated boundary of the Government till it reaches the source of the Korona River, thence, to Omapara, Whangaiarea Matakitaki, Tokanui and meets again at Tawakahutia.

The rent to be paid yearly till the expiration of the said lease shall be as follows. For the first five years £100 per annum. For the second five years £125 per annum. For the third five years £150 per annum. For the fourth five years £175 per annum. And for the last five years £200 per annum. The said Maori people whose names are Receipt for £300 advance. hereunto affixed and their relatives and hapus shall refund the sum of £300 advanced to them this day by John Wilson on account of this lease and the Government will on this account deduct the sum of £50 annually from the rent for six years, at which time the total sum of £300 will have been repaid. This deduction to commence on the eleventh year of the term of this lease. The Maoris whose names are hereunto affixed (their relations and hapus) shall defray the expense of surveying this land out of the money paid for rent to the extent of the mount of money advanced by the Government to the Surveyor which said amount shall be deducted and retained by the Government for the said purpose. In the event of gold or silver being discovered in that land and Europeans should desire to mine thereon they shall be allowed to do so under the Miner’s Right system and all fees paid for the said Miners’ Rights shall be handed over to the Maori people whose names are hereto affixed, the said fee being at the rate of £1 per annum for every individual mining thereon.
