The Pamphlet Collection of Sir Robert Stout: Volume 77

History of the English Poor Law

page break

History of the English Poor Law.

Vols. I. & II.—The demand for this standard work, which has been out of print for some time, since its original publication in 1854, has been such as to call for a new edition.

Daily News.—"It has now been before the world for considerably more than forty years and has long since taken its position as the standard authority on the subject of which it treats."

Specta Tor.—"This new edition of a work, which has almost become a classic, is enriched by a life of the author, and by many notes. The treatment embraces the whole of English History, and it deals not only with the various laws on pauperism, but also with the causes which produced it, and which aggravated the disease."

Vol. III.—This Volume, which is a Supplementary Volume to Sir George Nicholls's work, has been written by Mr. T. Mackay, author of "The English Poor," &c., who is a well-known and recognised authority on the subject.

Pall Mall Gazette.—"As befits the sequel to a classic, this work at once takes its place in the first front of the literature on the subject. This has such signal merits of its own that specialists will have to reckon with it."

Quarterly Review.—"Mr. Mackay has produced a remarkable book, written in a popular style, which will appeal to a wider circle of readers than either official publications or purely scientific works can hope for."

P. S. King & Son, Orchard House, Westminster.
