Death of Governor Hobson

page 30

Death of Governor Hobson.

At that banquet, reference was made to Governor Hobson's health, but no one thought that his public career was so soon to be cut short. During the period he held office he was under every disadvantage, which impaired health ana novel position could impose upon him. At midnight on the 9th September, 1842, he passed away peacefully, the wearied victim of a disease which had long preyed upon the naturally vigorous resources of his mind and body. All that is mortal of William Hobson, our first Governor, lies in the Anglican Symonds street Cemetery. Lady Hobson still survives in the mother country, and has a substantial interest in Auckland in landed property in Albert, Victoria, Chapel and Hobson Streets.
