Telephone System
Telephone System.
The telephone exchange system is being rapidly extended. Exchanges are established in seven towns—namely, Auckland, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch, Oamaru, Dunedin, and Invercargill. Two more will probably be opened, at Timaru and Napier. The total number of subscribers is 1,114. In Auckland, Wellington, and Dunedin there, are more subscribers to the population than either in page 95 London or New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, or Brooklyn, while the annual fee is less than one-half of what is charged in those cities. The number of subscribers to the New Zealand exchanges is exclusive of the free connections, of which there are 76.
