Ihakara Tukumaru to the Hon. D. McLean.
"To Mr. Mclean,
"Salutations to you. Friend, it will be good for you to come and settle this dispute, and also to speak to these persons, Hunia and Te Keepa, who are living in the midst of Ngatiraukawa, and causing trouble amongst the Ngatiraukawa. You have perhaps forgotten your word about the Ngatiraukawa Reserve. Friend, take away the arms belonging to the Government; do not leave them in their possession to do evil with; they do nothing but curse Ngatiraukawa. You have heard the curse of Te Peeti for the chiefs of Ngatiraukawa. The curse is, 'That the bones of Te Whatanui should be dug up and thrown into the Horowhenua Lake.' You understand the Native custom relating to curses. You have these persons tried by the law; do not leave them here to bring about war, and sin against God. That is all.
"From your affectionate friend,
"Ihakara Tukumaru.
