The foregoing two tables, compiled by Mr. Johnson, the Commissioner of Customs, for his official report, show very clearly the course of the trade of Canada. The great bulk of this, both as respects imports and exports, is between Great Britain and the United States. The exports to Great Britain have increased from nearly thirty-nine millions in 1873 to about forty-six millions in 1878, while to the United States they have dwindled from forty-two millions to twenty-five in the same period The imports show the converse of this, very nearly; and the fact is one of the greatest importance.
