Naturalisation.
23. Letters of naturalisation are granted to aliens residing in Victoria upon their taking an oath of allegiance to Her Majesty; but without becoming naturalised, alien friends resident in the colony may acquire real and personal property, and may convey, devise, and bequeath it in the same manner as if they had been British subjects by birth. Alien women married to British subjects become naturalised thereby. During the eleven years ended with 1879, the following persons of different nationalities have become naturalised:—French, 35; Belgians, 5; Dutch, 10; Austrians, 14; Germans, 546; Italians, 24; Spaniards, 4; Portuguese, 3; Russians, 9; United States subjects, 13; Chinese, 42; subjects to other countries, 251; total, 956.
