Professor Hutton, in his valuable work on

the geology of Otago and Southland, states that "an excellent deposit of clay is found in Stewart Island which would be suitable for superior porcelain ware. Veins of 'potash felspar' also have been found, and in sufficient quantity for use; and the large per centage of alkali it contains makes the stone an excellent flux for glazing pottery." The same writer points out that the establishment of glass works is an undertaking that could hardly fail to be remunerative, the material being available at our doors.
