* For this year, and for the first time, the Statistical Abstract gives a new item, viz., " Interest Credited," amounting in total to £1,246,'732—stating in a note that "Prior to the year 1877 the amount of Interest Credited was not separately distinguished, although it was included in the capital." In 1878, this item came to £1,261,678; in 1879 to £1,248,459; in 1880 to £1,240,829; in 1681 to £1,146,493; in 1882 to £1,159,715; in 1883 to £1,171,214; in 1884 to £1,193,597; and in 1885 to £1,216,604.

† It may be noted that the Capital Amounts of this and subsequent years do not include the amounts of Government Stock held for depositors, which in 1881 were £124,668, in 1882 £242,524, in 1883 £354,874, in 1884 £477,813, and in 1885 £650,356.
