Poetry and Music

Poetry and Music.

Poems From The Inner Life. By Lizzie Doten. Elegant cloth, tooled back, 6s.

This handsome volume opens with the wonderful experiences of the author, who is peculiary gifted as a trance medium and public speaker. Her platform labours have for a long time been unceasing, and the deep religious and spiritual tone of her discourses have extended her influence far beyond the limit of her voice, through the instrumentality of the Press. But it is chiefly for her mediumistic power to give utterance to poems noble, exalted, and thrilling, pervaded with a spirit religious and elevating, that she is most specially known. The volume before us contains the gems of the inspirational utterances, given chiefly before public audiences, under direct spirit influence. Several of them are attributed to the spirit of Edgar A. Poe. They have all the rythmic beauty, grandeur, and imagery of his productions in earth life, but far surpass these in exaltedness of conception and purity of purpose. Others are by the inspiration of Shakespeare, Burns, A. W. Sprague; but in many cases the author's name is not recorded. The Biographical introduction gives a succinct account of the means by which these poems are given to the world. The peculiar influence which each spirit exercised over the medium is stated, and the unmistakeable certainty and significance of this higher phase of spiritual communion is beautifully pourtrayed. The book is a valuable addition to the evidences in favour of spirit intercourse, and of its ennobling tendencies. Blossoms of our Spring. By Hudson and Emma Tuttle. Handsome cloth, 6s.

"America : a National Poem," extending over 80 pages, commences this volume, followed by "A Vision of Death," in which conditions and social arrangements in the spirit spheres are described. Forty short pieces intervene, and the book closes with "Life's Passion Story," a dramatic poem of 136 pages, which with much power and beauty exhibits the causes of domestic discord, and the means whereby domestic peace and conjugal happiness may be attained. The smaller poems have also a social tendency, many of them being descriptive of love episodes, in all cases followed by an instructive moral, showing the uses of these passions in man's spiritual development.

The Poet, and Other Poems. By Achsa W. Sprague. Handsome cloth, 6s.

A brief sketch of the gifted author precedes these poems. She was for several years a public speaker on the Spiritual philosophy, having been developed for the work by spirit influence. Her health ultimately failed, and during convalescence she dictated many poems, only a selection from which appear under the above title. "The Poet," containing 4600 lines, was committed to paper in 72 hours, and was finished within three weeks of its commencement. It is a colloqiual production, and describes the career and powers of an improvisatrice one endowed with the mediumistic gift by which this volume was produced. Another dramatic poem of 3000 lines was completed in four and a half days. The volume is replete with lofty thought and valuable instruction.
