Nandidæ.
Body oblong, compressed, covered with scales. Lateral line interrupted. Dorsal fin formed by a spinous portion and by a soft, the latter being the less developed; anal fin with three spines, and with its soft portion similar to the soft dorsal. Ventral fins thoracic, with one spine and five or four soft rays. Dentition more or less complete, generally feeble. Five or six branchios-tegals; gills, four, or three and a half; pseudobranchiæ present in the marine, absent or hidden in the fresh-water genera. An air-bladder. No superbranchial organ.
