Victoria '65 Supplement to Salient, Vol. 28, No. 1. 1965.
The Sub-Committees
The Sub-Committees
It probably would not be incorrect to say that sub-committees produce the ideas of the Association.
Any student may belong to any sub-committee, conditional on his appointment being confirmed by the Executive, and a couple of hundred students do. Applications for sub-committee membership are normally called for in the middle of the year when new committee chairmen are appointed from the incoming executive, but students can and do join the sub-committee during their term of office. Any student wishing to join a sub-committee at the beginning of 1965 should hand into the Association office a written application stating the committee he wishes to join, his name and his address.
Normally a copy of the next agenda will be forwarded and on attending that meeting his appointment to the committee will be recommended to Executive.
This year most committees have a fairly strong membership and one or two have almost become the end product of Parkinson's Law. Particularly popular committees have been House, Cultural Affairs and Public Relations.
The following sub-committees currently exist, and may be contacted through the chairmen mentioned.
Education
Chaired by Sue Madgwick, it concerns itself with student views on courses at the University. They have made recommendations on new courses and also organised lectures and talks to students. A series of lunch-time lectures is proposed for the beginning of 1965.
House
This committee controls those areas of the Student Union building which are under student control. They are responsible for discipline, and also carry a heavy administrative burden. Recommendations on further building plans have come from this committee. Their Coffee Bar venture is referred to elsewhere. The chairman is Nick Bullock.
Capping
This committee organises the annual Capping celebrations, described in more detail elsewhere. (Chairman, Denis Paxie).
Publications
Controls the Student Association publications, Salient, Cappicade, and also the Association's section of "Introduction to the University." It is on this Committee's recommendation that the editors of these publications are appointed. Chris Robert-son is chairman.
Cultural Affairs
Has recently become a Council along the lines of Sports Council, and concerns itself with the wide field indicated by its title, including the annual inter-university Arts Festival which is held this year at Victoria. Chairwoman is Kiri Haira.
Sports Council
Chaired by Murray Boldt; it controls the numerous sports clubs affiliated to the Association. Grants to sports club are made on this committee's recommendation. The winter Sports Tournament will be held at Victoria this year in August.
Public Relations
This committee is concerned with the 'image' of university students held by the outside world.
The committee concerns itself with the nebulous world of town-gown relations, and has organised functions and publicity designed to make the Association and its members better known. Its chairman is David Shand.
Accommodation
A relative new-comer, Chaired by Trevor Crawford, the committee concern itself with student accommodation needs in Wellington.
International Affairs
Chairwoman, Helen Sutch. Takes a broad interest in the social, economic and political world, particularly where students are concerned
Social
Organises social functions of the Association, such dances. It is Chaired by Andrew Cornwall.
