Victoria '65 Supplement to Salient, Vol. 28, No. 1. 1965.

The Cafeteria

The Cafeteria

The Dining Room contract stipulates that the caterer, Mr F. Levenbach, must provide meals at set prices for students and staff during term time. At each meal, courses must be available at the agreed prices, although more expensive alternatives may be offered as well.

The prices have been set in such a way that reasonable quality meals are available to the students, while the caterer can hope to at least break even on these sales.

In practice, Mr Levenbach has been providing student meals at a slight loss. However, he can look in turn to a small extent to profits from the shop and to a much greater extent to the income earned by catering for non-university functions. These bring his income up to a worthwhile level.

The contract allows Mr Levenbach to cater for non-university functions in the Dining Room subject to these being approved by the Managing Secretary.

The income from the use of the Dining Room by non-university groups has been put into the Student Union building fund and will go towards extending the Union facilities.

The success of the Dining Room contract system, in contrast with the difficulties experienced with catering systems in the past at this University and other New Zealand universities, has in part resulted from Mr Levenbach's very good name in the catering trade before he accepted the University contract.
