Victoria '65 Supplement to Salient, Vol. 28, No. 1. 1965.

City Art Gallerys

City Art Gallerys

Wellington is well provided with galleries. The National Art Gallery, housed in Buckle Street and sharing quarters with the Dominion Museum, has been justifiably criticised for its geographical remoteness. Suggestions have been made that it should be moved into the city centre. Its principal exhibitions are well advertised in the daily papers.

Willeston Galleries, on the corner of Willeston Street and Victoria Street, and Artides Gallery, now in Harris Street just behind the Public Library, are two private galleries which frequently hold exhibitions.

Centre Gallery, in Lambton Quay, is a private gallery which is not conducted as part of a commercial business operation but rather as a showplace of the many aspects of New Zealand art. It has just appointed a full-time director.

James Smiths Ltd. has also held occasional art exhibitions of a somewhat conservative nature.
