Committee Men

Committee Men

Conrad Bollinger

Known in Tramping. Debating and Socialist Clubs, and heard of elsewhere, Conrad is a third-year Arts student with several units of a Law degree. He has acted in two Extravs, confessing part authorship of this year's show, "Jubileevit"; was in VUC Drama team, winter 1948; a "Salient" columnist for three years.

His policy is unreservedly anti-isolationist, standing for co-operation with student and youth organisations overseas; he believes students can play an important role in safeguarding peace, including opposition to conscription, and that people's money would be better spent on improving library, staffing, building and other facilities in the University—and on a Student Union Building. Stands for a universal student medical scheme, a united stand on board, tramways and other costs affecting students, and student co-operation in College Departmental management.

Paul Cotton

Paul Cotton is a second-year Arts student. He is Secretary of the Charter Society and member of the Rowing, Hockey and Tramping, as well as the Debating and Policital Science Societies, and the Drama Club. At 1949 Easter Tournament he was a member of the Publicity Committee and Secretary to the NZU Blues Panel. He has taken part in Processions and Extravs in 1948-49.

He considers the new Student Union Building and Caféteria Reform are urgent matters and thinks the Executive should fight for improved conditions in Weir House as soon as possible. Paul would like to see more adequate training facilities for sports clubs and feels that an investigation into this possibility should be instituted immediately. When politics appear in Executive affairs Paul would like to see open discussions actively attended by all shades of political opinion in the University.

Frank Curtin

Frank Curtin, a third-year Law-Arts student, is a committee member of the Debating Society, the Catholic Students' Guild and the Charter Society, as well as being a club representative on the ISS Committee. An active member of the Rugby Football Club and the Table Tennis Club. Other clubs he supports are the Political Science Society, the Law Faculty Club and the Cricket Club. Extrav '48 and 49.

"I begin by saying that I have no policy and explain that this way. I believe that a policy can best be presented as a result of experience. Having had no experience on Exec., I have, therefore, no policy. However, I believe that all clubs should receive the maximum support; but particularly those clubs which depend upon achievement for their continued success—competitive sports, drama, debating and the like."

Vance Henderson

Vance Henderson, LL.B., doing Honours this year. Well known at VUC as Senior Easter Tournament Delegate 1949. Chairman New Zealand University Tournament Committee 1949, 'Junior Winter Tournament Delegate 1948, Extrav Social and Oil Fuel Controller 1949, Blues Committee 1949, NZU Blue in shooting three times, VUC Blue four times, four years Army and Air Force, President and Past-Vice and Secretary Defence Rifle Club, Committee Miniature Rifle Club. Past Sec. Rowing Club, ex Gym Controller, previous Exec, member, four years Weir House. Qualified in academic, sporting, and administrative spheres.

Believes that an Exec, member should be there solely to put what he can towards the student cause, and enjoy doing it for its own sake. Wants cigarettes, chocolate, drinks to be sold in the cafe, the Exec, to take up the Weir House meal position, more stringent financial policy, beautification of present Gym surroundings by terraced lawns, a special hut for a mixed common room comfortably appointed.

Jim Hogg

Jim is a third-year Law and Arts student. President of the Charter Society, an active member of the Drama Club, the Tramping Club and the Debating Club. He also took part in the recent Exerav.

His policy is to improve student amenities, to establish close contact between the City and the University, and to concentrate on student affairs rather than matters which rightly concern a Department of External Affairs.

Nick Jennings

Is a second-year Science student. A member of the Tramping, Charter and Socialist Clubs. As a "Salient" reporter in '48 and 49, has a few clues on College activities.

Believes that there is good in most things, and does his best to bring it out.

In all subjects, determines what he thinks is the right thing to do and acts accordingly; he thus feels that student interests come at all times before outside interests.

Hector MacNeill

Hector MacNeill is a fifth-year student and a graduate in Arts. He has been a part-time student for the past three years and has taken part in many College activities. He is a member of and has supported the Hockey, Chess and Drama Clubs, and has served as Sec.-Treasurer and Vice-President of the latter society. Mr MacNeill firmly believes that the interests of part-time students have been neglected by the Stud. Assn. and he has associated himself with efforts to improve the cafeteria. He believes that sensationalised ideological issues have wasted the time of the Stud. Assn. and have reflected no credit on any section of the College.

Neil Mountier

Neil Mountier, Honorary Assistant Secretary to the present Exec. Is a VUC Delegate to the Committee organising 1950 Congress. He has finished his Science Degree and now, this seventh year at Victoria, is taking Philosophy I. He is President of the Philosophical Society and has been on the table-tennis Committee (1944) and the Gramophone Committee 1944-1947, using the latter position to present Jazz Sessions. Worked in Extrav Props 1944, 45, 48, and has taken part in those notable little cultural missions to Palmerston North in '45 and to Nap [unclear: ier] last year. Returning officer Exec, elections 1947 and April 1948. Deputy returning officer June 1948. Particularly interested—almost active—in converting part of the lower Gym into a Common Common Room. Also rather keen about NZU Congress.

Pip Piper

Present member of the Executive (co-opted last March). Has been Rehab, student for three years, now first year at Training College and hopes to finish B.Sc. this year.

Has been actively connected with many sports clubs (Senior Tournament Delegate Easter and Winter 1948) and at present plays Water-Polo and Basketball for Varsity teams and tramps intermittently. Has VUC Blue in Swimming and Basketball and at present is Secretary of the Swimming Club.

Intends to give full support for sporting clubs to encourage students to play for Varsity teams.

For this year is Distribution Manager and Assistant Sports Editor of "Salient" and takes an interest in Socialist Club activities.

Wants to see greater enthusiasm for NZU Student Congress at Curious Cove, expresses, as a returned serviceman, solid support with VUCSA against military peace-time conscription and will encourage VUC to lead the way for greater cooperation with WFDY and IUS to ensure peace and better conditions fqr all students.

Chris Pottinger

Third-year Arts student, full-time. Past sins include: Extrav '48 and '49, Process Committee '48, Controller '49, ISS Convener '49. Has written the odd article for "Salient," attended Congress '49 and has helped in Tournaments. Interested in Drama, Rugby, Debating and Literary Societies'.

Prepared to agitate for control of Kelburn Park by the University to raise the standard of Vic sport and to attract students playing for outside teams. Would like to see a revision of the system of grants to clubs, investigation into drain on revenue through careless loss of association property and provision for better storage facilities. Wants a new Deal for cultural clubs and greater staff student co-operation in every aspect of University life. Strongly supports Congress as the only means or exchanging views with other students. Wants all-out support for ISS and IUS.

Lance Robinson

Lance Robinson is a full-time, fifth-year Science student. For four years he was a resident of Weir House and in 1948 was on the committee. He is a member of the VUCISS Committee and thinks that the students of the College should, support ISS by more active means than lip-service at AGMs. He is a member of the SCM and is on its committee at VUC. He takes an active interest in the Tennis Club and feels that sport should not be prostituted to the demands of tournament. He attended Congress and is keen that such gatherings be continued. He would like to see greater co-operation between cultural-partisan clubs, especially in the way of common discussion and debate.

Ralph Unger

Ralph Unger is a Philosophy Honours student also doing Science. Interested in the Drama. Tramping, Socialist, and Table Tennis Clubs and "Salient."

He wants to see closer staff-student relationships, opportunity for students to demand Stud. Assn. discussion of important Exec, decisions, improvement of cafe, information bureau about courses for freshers, co-operation between academic clubs, development of a better system of grants to clubs and improvement of common rooms and their facilities.
