Catering — Coping in the Cafe

Catering

Coping in the Cafe

Firstly let me say, after an unpleasant incident in the cafe this week (the first since I came here), I will not tolerate any abuse of my staff who perform a difficult task in hot, old-fashioned badly-designed conditions. Service will be refused to anyone who can not behave in a reasonable manner. The majority of you are pleasant, co-operative and helpful. I ask your assistance when the odd lout acts aggressively.

Secondly, in the cafe and probably the burger bar too we will be serving tea and coffee in paper cups from now on. The plastic cups have disappeared despite requests to return them, so we have no option but to return to the old way!

Finally, to the 27 students who wrote to me - thank you for your congratulations on the improvement in catering services. However, whilst I appreciate your feelings at the loss of the 'coffee bar' I cannot at present make any further changes to the operation. The hard facts are that it is a very difficult business to provide good services in this building. The physical facilities are appallingly bad - really antiquated - which necessitates extra staff. You will no doubt understand that it is necessary to generate a large turnover to cover all the costs.

The old coffee bar was simply not viable, so there is little chance of a return to that style of service. May I suggest that you use the restaurant - The Sunflower Seed has delicious filled rolls and cakes, muffins, tea, herb tea, perked coffee, fruit juices, all of a much better quality than we sold in the coffee bar last year. It also has a nice atmosphere - plants, flowers on the tables and folk singers at night. And you can try the house speciality dishes, hot and cold, that Steve and Sue make. We even provide a continental meat dish each night now. See you there!!

Perhaps the writer of the letter would make him/her self known to me? Thanks for writing.
