[unclear: liman's] Right of Choice

[unclear: pvier],

[unclear: n] writing to comment on the article that [unclear: red] in last week's Salient entitled Abortion [unclear: d]. The article completely ignores a [unclear: In's] right to decide whether to have a child. Even if we have a society free from sexual [unclear: Inination], women must still have this right. [unclear: Ih] a society, the burden of an unwanted would be much lighter, but it would still Motherhood, even with adequate daycare [unclear: lies], socialised housework etc., would still the woman's life tremendously. Women [unclear: had] be allowed to make this decision themselves [unclear: s], after many years of struggle, they are allo- [unclear: decide] who, if and when they will marry.

[unclear: writer] of last week's article claims that [unclear: lien] have turned to the abuses of men as [unclear: cation] for abortion", and that "this [unclear: sof] revenge." This is absurd reasoning on [unclear: xounts.] Firstly it is not just because some [unclear: efuse] to shoulder half of the responsibility [unclear: enthood] that women want abortions. Even [unclear: the] father supported women's rights an [unclear: ued] child would still mean that one of would have to leave their job, and, unless were incredibly wealthy and could afford [unclear: sitters] every night and all weekend, their lifestyle would be changed. And what of [unclear: uple] who can't afford a child? How would [unclear: liber's] concern for women's rights help [unclear: a]

[unclear: oodly], many men support women's right to [unclear: on]. Do they take this stand in order to [unclear: h] the foetus for the abuses of men? I think

[unclear: Knen's] right to abortion is one of the central [unclear: nds] of the women's movement. Women [unclear: en] must fight for this right and/or the necessary conditions to allow women to in equal pan in society.

[unclear: rage] Student Speaks Out

Sir,

[unclear: I] hear a lot of crap about Studass [unclear: mung] the 'average student' but in spite of [unclear: act] that several supposed average students [unclear: atified] themselves, nobody has been able [unclear: ove] their case until now. Yes Sir, I am the and only average student! My horribly [unclear: He] dimensions are 5 foot 7 inches, 9 stone [unclear: ds] like milliwotsit still mean nothing to me) [unclear: I] have sick looking mongrelish brown hair. Solidarity with Chile!

Dear Editor,

Gumboots, black singlets and smelly armpits seem to be an integral part of New Zealand's Agri Culture. But whoever heard of anyone losing a pair of genuine lace-up gumboots on campus. (It just does not seem to be the trendy thing to wear in the Intelli Culture).

Well, I did, at the end of last term, and am desperate to have them back. Being a typical penniless student I would ask that whoever took them for their own from down outside the Hunter Building to give me a ring.

As Bad as 'Truth'

Dear Sir,

To Whom it May Concern;

We the undersigned, while noting the pitiful and ineffectual leadership of the association since the forced resignation of the President by the Executive on 31 July call on Mr Andrew Tees to reconsider his position and to put himself forward for the presidential vacancy at the forthcoming by-election, failing that we call on all responsible students to vote No Confidence in executive member Caroline Massof who at the time of writing is the only candidate for the vacant Presidential position for the rest of the 1979. This having been done, we would then further call on Mr Tees to take up the position of President for the rest of 1979.

We issue this call not out of any personal animosity for Ms. Massof but out of a firm belief that she, is neither competent or experienced enough to represent the students at Victoria University. In particular we note with grave concern that the SRC saw fit not top elect Ms Massof to the position of President nor did a subsequent SRC meeting see fit to reserve it's previous decision to hold a full by-election.

It is patently obvious that there is a chance that Ms Massof may be elected because she is the only candidate rather than having the general confidence of students in spite of the fact that in effect two SRC meetings have rejected the notion of electing the executive candidate, Ms Massof to the Presidency.

We appeal to students to consider these facts and vote accordingly. We call on other students to sign here at the bottom of this letter and send it into the 'Salient' office forthwith and thus summon Mr Tees to return to the job he has been given successive mandates to do at a previous executive election and at a Special General Meeting in May.

We appeal to the Editor of Salient to print this in full in the next available issue of the paper.

Donald Hartington,

Jan Aitken,

Flatmate (who prefers to remain anonymous),

D.J.W. Alexander.

PS. We will be exceedingly surprised if you prim this. Normally we couldn't care less what happens to the Students Association but in this unusual set of circumstances, we do. Many apologies for the poor typing.

More Opposition to Gay Rights

Dear Editor,

While I don't agree with all his arguments, I would like to congratulate the author of last week's letter criticising recent attempts to glamorize homosexuality (Angry Liberated Man). I too share his concern with such trends based on the fact that I find the act biologically and morally objectionable.

While I feel that individuals should take a compassionate view towards such people, I think that encouraging and promoting such behaviour is harmful to both the individual as well as to society.

Homosexuality is not as mystical as some would make it out to be. Psychiatrists (such as Freud) have long known that young males tend to feel affection towards males during the middle part of their formative years, often idolizing and emulating them. However, as the normal male matures physically and psychologically such attitudes are redirected towards the opposite sex.

Homosexuals are individuals who are stunted in this natural progression usually for some psychological reason, often beyond their own comprehension (rarely by freedom of choice). The real crime of certain recent movements, such as Gay Liberation, is that they make the homosexual resigned to the fact that he can never change. The recent findings by American sex therapists, Masters and Johnson reveal the fallacy of this approach. They found that almost 90 percent of the homosexuals who were willing to attempt to overcome their psychological barriers, could do so.

If human behaviour had no effect on other human beings behaviour, then any type of human behaviour might be acceptable. Unfortunately, such is not the case. There is enough confusion over normal human sexuality, those that are promoting or encouraging homosexuality are only encouraging such confusion. Compassion and understanding — yes, promotion — no.

So Much for "Liberated Man"

Reply to letter 'Gays Condemned.'

Dear angry liberated man (liberated towards women),

Perhaps when you give up your autosodomitic practises you will come to realize what an unnatural pervert you are! Since when does the average woman or the average man have sex just for the purpose of procreation rather, normally, they go out of their way to avoid it. Pure procreation is for the animals, people with feelings for each other have sex because they like each other and no doubt this is the same for gay people (who have good reason to be angry with senseless people like you.) Perhaps, when you are approached by a gay person, you could take a lesson from all the women you pester and say "no", perhaps even take it as a compliment that some other human being felt that you were worth knowing for from the sound of your letter you present as an ignorant chauvinistic paranoid w.....!

The Guilty Always Write Letters

Dear Sir,

You, along with my millions of other followers, have undoubtedly noticed the last edition of your rag in which two letters regarding my notice of proposals were published. I find both these letters distasteful in the extreme. One has obviously been, written by a certified mental defective, and in it a refusal of my proposal is indicated.

The second communication was written by the cute, charming, vivacious, large, bovine, and rather overwhelming Cathy Marshall (possibly better known as CAM). Cathy, it appears, has accepted my proposal—but only for two reasons which she sums up with the phrase "It's his baby too"! It is to Cathy's letter, and in particular the above extract, to which I address myself this week.

Although I am grateful at Cathy finally explaining her penchant for tent dresses, let me make it quite clear that I am not now and never have been involved in Cathy's Little Bundle of Joy. Cathy darling, you can go off and do what it appears you have already done to some considerable degree The damn thing is not [unclear: tuuie] and I refuse to take responsibility for your non-existent morals.

Furthermore, the current economic situation precludes my adding further to my already overlarge string of debts, so I am afraid the ritual Exchange of Camels is off.

With regard to your little problem may I suggest you have a word with one of the Littens, or better still the crew of the aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne. If you cannot bring yourself to do this then let me warn you that lots of hot baths, jumping up-and-down, or deep breathing will not do the slightest iota of good..

Yours in All Innocence I Beg You Believe,

P. O'Donoghue.

In Fact Some Days

Attacks on David Lo

Dear Editor'

If I am not wrong, David K. Lo was one of the few 'activists', who collected signatures during the 45% cutback campaign. What on earth is this petty contradictory creature doing arguing that overseas students have no right to receive education here in the last issue of Salient? Don't his previous and present indulgences denote his double standard, repugnant, repulsive and neurotic nature?

David also emasculated the noble cause of marching to the parliament, in favour of so- called proper channels, ie talking behind the scenes with those arrogant bureaucrats in the Beehive. Such docile indulgences have proved a failure on many occasions. In fact, NOSAC did send a delegation to meet Mr Wellington a few days before the march. Mr Wellington totally refuted all the factual proposals and grievances put by the delegation and arrogantly concluded the meeting by saying "Why don't you go to Australia where you don't have to pay fees!" This again exposed the New Zealand government's lip service attitude to foreign aid.

Fortunately and promisingly, the majority of the Malaysian students are not as self-centred and egoistic and David Lo, judging by the good turn out and overwhelming support in the march. By bringing together all the forces under the leadership of NOSAC, we have fought a beautiful battle and the high school students were exempted from the exorbitant fees rise. Wasn't the march fruitful? It is needless for me to say more, it should be clear and obvious even to egg-heads like David Lo.

Unfair treatment seems to be endless. Now the Education Minister's axe is falling onto senior students, as post-graduates will have to pay $1500 too next year. This is a very good and educative lesson for those TIDAK APA, apathetic and selfish senior students who claimed the fees rise did not apply to them and did not give a damn about the anti fees rise campaign. Now it is high time for all high school, junior and senior students to work together to forge ahead with the anti fees rise campaign. United we stand, divided we fall.

While the anti fees rise campaign is gaining momentum, David Lo is again attempting to divert the campaign to the polemical Vietnamese refugee issue. I suggest David Lo leads a delegation to meet the Malaysian High Commissioner behind the smoke screen (I doubt David Lo can gather more than one delegate) rather than marching to the High Commission is more appropriate.

Finally, I urge all overseas students not to fall into the trap of David Lo's zig zagging pronouncements in the last Salient.

Yours sincerely

Salleh

The Role of Protest

Dear Editor,

In the last issue of Salient, August 6, David K Lo expressed his opposition to the Discriminatory Fee campaign and charged that a lot of Malaysian students in Wellington have double standards vis-a-vis the Vietnamese refugees in Malaysia..

I find his ill-found arguments and inconsistent views only served to confuse the issues. Nevertheless, I will entertain his fantasy. A healthy debate might help settle the dust in the air.

1. Forms of Protest

a.Talking about diplomacy, Muldoon consulted none of the bodies concerned with overseas students (OSAC, University people, NZUSA or NOSAC) when he announced the $1500 fees. If Muldoon really believed in 'behind the scenes' negotiation, no such blatantly arrogant policies and reasons would be issued from his office.
b.An Emergency NOSAC meeting was held the day after Muldoon announced the fees increase. Subsequently, 5 or 6 NOSAC meetings have been held. Through National, NOSAC provided the general guidelines and resources to co-ordinate action throughout the country, but the final decisions lay with each local campus. It was the concerned Malaysian students present in such meetings who democratically decided the ways and means to carry put the campaign.
c.Simultaneously with publicity and protest marches, representatives were sent to see University councillors. High School principals, MPs and the Minister of Education.
d.Even David had to admit surprise at the overwneiming support by Malaysian students for the marches. Perhaps it is high time, he searches his soul more conscientiously as to what he has done on this issue that concerns the welfare of fellow Malaysian students. In fact, where had David been throughout the campaign? No one saw him at the NOSAC meetings. Perhaps that explains his ignorance and ill-favoured attitude to the whole campaign?

2. Right, Privilege or Obligation?

It is beyond the scope of this letter to go into the polemics of whether overseas studednts have a right to education in NZ; or is it a privilege granted to them; it is the NZ government s moral obligation to provide it as a form of foreign aid. David Lo is entitled to his own view and his peculiar concept of dignity. But, if he cares to hear the other side of the story, there is plenty of material put out by NOSAC.

3. $1500 Fee is a Discrimination

David Lo argued we are here on the good will of the NZ government and hence should accept discrimination and prosecution with dignity. To see the attack on overseas students in isolation is plain short sightedness. The issue must be viewed in the context of the NZ government's tragic Education cuts policy, and that the overseas students were made a convenient scapegoat. Hence, our protest against the discriminatory fees is totally justified and has enjoyed the full support of NZ students and staff, through the Professorial Board, University Council, VUWSA and NZUSA.

4. Where does the Fight Begin?

The fight for justice has no bounds, and definitely should not be limited to one's country. As long as injustice is done, there will be protest, which can take many forms. David Lo is well informed about how Malaysian ISA operates. Ironically, he also suggested direct open confrontation, a suicidal approach that will practically lead to nowhere. Will David Lo, who has not lifted a finger for the welfare of fellow students in NZ be leading the fight at home?

5. Concern for Vietnamese Refugees

MSSA had laid down its view, in black and white, on the issue of Vietnamese refugees in its magazine 'Outlook'. A brief survey on students' views was also printed. On top of that, a forum was jointly Organised by NOSAC and MSSA. on the 9th August in the Smoking Lounge. About 35 people turned up. We would have liked to see a lot more. Also, it was quite Surprising that David Lo who has expressed such immense sympathy and concern for the Vietnamese refugees didn't even show up to express his sentiments. It makes me wonder whether his charge that 'a lot of Malaysians here have double standards' is meant to include himself.

6. Marching for the Refugees

Perhaps as a heroic gesture to cover his pathetic arguments, he jestingly suggested a march to the Malaysian High Commission in support of the Vietnamese refugees. If he seriously thought of that, MSSA is prepared to hold a special meeting to consider the march. And if he can establish his case and can persuade the students to support his idea of a march, MSSA is quite willing to help organise it.

An end to Anonymity

Dear Sir,

As a matter of course, I would expect that all articles in Salient carry a by-line. This is especially necessary in articles which hold a, specific point of view-I refer to "Abortion attacked" and where the reader is entitled to know who or what organization is presenting the particular viewpoint.

Kate Reed.

(I agree whole-heartedly with you. But Salient can't win-if I had refused to print the article merely because it lacked a by-line I would have been accused of refusing to print articles that I did not agree with. However, by printing it, your charge becomes quite valid. I felt it was better to give Liferight an opportunity to express their views, than to get touchy about by-lines-ed.)

Good-bye Llamas Hello World!

In the mind-boggling wake of our glorious orgasmic departure from mental degradation and moral straight-jacketing, my Peruvian colleagues and I wish to express our gratitude to all you lusty depraved people who helped make it all possible, and to offer the position of Premier in the new regime (or any other position she likes) to Carol Addley.

Dear Peter,

As part of my policy of loving my enemies, I want to say Hi! to wee Arthur Hedgehog, and thank him for last Saturday night. Being resigned to the editorial prejudice so manifest in Salient (and in our sick society in general), I will limit myself today to warning Monsieur Gazelle against his course of action — Gazelles besides being related to the evil goat, are preposterously silly — their whole frivolous approach to life is 'centred around jumping, up and down — exhibitionism and vanity! In fact, I have it on good authority from the big G himself, that gazelles are shortly to become extinct, along with hedgehog fanciers, communists, corrupt journalists, and fairies.

Nearly Half a Stone

Dear Ed,

I've had enough of people accusing me of being sex-hungry (whatever that means?) or trying to push me onto their unwanted fellas. Let it be known that I am still the pure innocent girl I was when I started university (although I have gained six pounds.)

Love,

Carol Addley.

A Pertinent Question

Dear Sir,

Who is this jealous man?

Yours,

The girl in the red/orange

bush jacket.

Where's the Right?

Dear Peter,

Looking around this university I sit down and wonder whether the right is fighting or if they're getting ready to roll over and decay. For they are conspicuously absent, fading back into their well worn corner. They scream for the facts but all they give is editorial diarrhoea. For in that one sheet of verbose jargon that is all you get. How do you think they manage to regurgitate the same old crap in 3 editions?

Who are these unnamed, do they really fear standing up and being counted? There is an old saying, "even if you're paranoid, it doesn't mean they're not out to get you." Who are these people are going to get you? Do they lurk around these hallowed halls ready to bite your type-writing fingers off?

Are they trying to play the same game as that right-wing non student, who tries to speak via his lawyers' threatening letters. Are these perpetrators really crying out for democracy or their own glory, for who really put the 'mock' in democracy? They are the false prophets who promise beer but only give you a mug that is devoid of any substance. They abuse without being prepared to work for our association. They denounce the people who are the back-bones, ignoring the biggest march in Victoria University's history.

Have they really got the so called average student at heart, or do they scheme to ruin the students' chance of fighting back against government policy? In other words do they really want an association. Are they trying to push their closed 'clique'? For who knows who they are, that certain Committee that doesn't belong to the association, where it would be affected by democracy, to become open, not a dictatorship.

For that's what they would like to do by shutting up this association's Salient, which keeps debate alive, and gives the facts not emotional dribble. For that's all we've seen come from the mixed up minds of the right. These diminutive mentalities who set themselves up as God. For they aren't lily white virgins but have their hands well and truly blackened.

Yours,

Barry Weeber.
