Successful Commission

Successful Commission

Overall, National was a "successful" Commission at August Council. This was the result of several factors. I imagine that Jim (General Vice-President) Brown would not admit to being the world's number one chairperson but he worked with all the efficiency necessary to allow National to get through all its policy and have enough time to set priorities, a budget and determine a good set of specific tasks for the GVP to fulfill. It was Jim's style which allowed a relaxed commission, and even on issues with a wide divergence of opinion, there was a surprising lack of acrimony.

Another aspect of the successful nature of the Commission was, as mentioned, the number of specific tasks given to the GVP in order to action priorities. As examples, Jim will make further representations to the Danks Committee with regard to freedom of information, will supply material to student newspapers on anti-civil liberties legislation and on the cuts to the Public Hospital Expenditure and will produce a series of posters, leaflets and a series of articles to publicise the SCSP scheme and union membership.
