Clubs Activites

Come and join in the club life on campus: This is one way of breaking the boredom of study. Many clubs will be advertising their activities during Orientation so if if you think you may be interested in taking part in any of these come up and talk to the club organisers — they won't bite but will be only too pleased to answer any questions you might have.

The Tramping Club will run a series of activities, so there will be plenty of opportunity to grab hold of them. On Tuesday 27 March they will abseil Easterfield between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. (unless of course the wind does not permit). On the same evening in the lounge between 6.30 p.m. and 8 p.m. they will show slides of the club activities.

The Progressive Student Alliance (don't be scared off by the name) will be jumping straight into positive activities; starting on Tuesday 27 February with an organising meeting between 12 and 100 p.m. in the Lounge of the Union Building. Further activities will-be run to mark "International Women's Day", on March 8—starting with a forum in the Union Hall between 12 and 2 p.m. and a social evening the same night. The Rugby Club will prove to you that rugby is not all rucks and scrums (Oh how I love those scrums) and will run a social hour at their very fine club rooms in Wai-te-ata Road., on 7 March from 4.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. Where's Wai-te-ata Road? O.K.J I'm getting there. Take your bodies to the Recreation Centre, and into the Restoration Cafe, look out the window, and you will see Wai-te-ata Road!

Karate; a very demanding sport and the Karate Club will prove this on Monday 5 March with a display in the Union Hall. After the demonstration go and say "hello", and you too could be breaking bricks by the end of the year. This sport is not only for for the males with hairy chests, but is open to to all people who are keen.

The Motorcycle Club will begin this year with a slides evening on Tuesday 6 March between 8 p.m. — 10 p.m. in the lounge. And if this grabs you have a look at the real thing on Sunday 11 March. So sports don't interest you, too much for the system; well how about pottery. The Pottery Club will demonstrate their art in the main foyer of the Union Building from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday 1 March. Maybe the flat looks a bit bare of cups and plates — well don't but, get involved and make make them.

With new facilities in the Recreation Centre, the Swords Club is waiting to help beginners get into the game. Don't know much about it? Well see them in action on on Monday 5 March through the Cafe and in the Union Building from 1 p.m. — 2 p.m. This club has some of the top New Zealand swords people in it and they are keen to help newcomers.

If you are now saying, "Well, all this is fine but why can't I get in and participate?" The Volley Ball and Basket Ball Clubs have the answers. On March I and 2 respectively you will be able to go along to the Recreation Centre (from 12-2 p.m. Volley Ball and 12-4 p.m. Basket Ball) and get a chance to play as part of a team. Its a good opportunity to meet new friends who share the same interest.

Not all clubs have activities going on and if the one you want to join has nothing going - ring the contact number in the VUWSA Handbook or fill in the club sheets handed out at enrollment and return them to the Students' Association Office and your name will be handed on to the club.

The Young Socialists activities feature a forum on the turmoil in Iran on March 6, at 12 noon.
