Big-time Wrestling

Big-time Wrestling

NZUSA has just ended round two of its selection process for officers for next years National Office. The result? Two of the three fulltime positions were filled and one part time position was also filled.

Next years President is Lisa Sacksen who will serve her second term in that position. She beat off challenges from Lin Roberts (Auckland) and George Love (Canterbury). With an increased majority over last year (she received 25 votes out of 42—3 more than required). Lisa Sacksen seemed to receive a vote of confidence in the type of leadership she has been giving. Although there were criticisms of her lack of bureaucration, Lisa said that NZUSA needed a generalist at The Top who could give an overview of the work NZUSA was doing.

The other two candidates stood on platforms of passivity, especially George Love who stated that he "wouldn't do anything if students didn't want him to." He received only his own campus' votes.

Lin Roberts stood somewhere between the two but lacked fire in her selection speech with The National Exec. Perhaps she aimed too high in the heirarchv.

The second election held was that for Education Vice-President, possibly the most important of the Vice President positions.

The two candidates were Stephenie Dale, Otago's Education Officer, and Lindy Cassidy our own President.

Lindy spoke first stating her plans for a bursaries campaign right from the start of the year. "If we do not receive a rise next year, it will mean a cut in our standard of living", Lindy said. Lindy's main strengths have been to organise students at a campus level.

Stephanie Dale, although having no great weakness in this area stressed more conventional methods of campaigning such as letter writing campaigns and the like.

In a close battle, Stephanie headed off Lindy with the aid of anti-Victoria sentiments and support from the encumbant.

For the Womens Right Action Committee Coordinator Leonie Morris, the sole applicant impressed National Executive and got the job.
