Vacancies in Flats after Finals

The Accommodation Officer, Mrs M. Brown, has written to other New Zealand universities offering to assist their students working in Wellington over the summer vacation to find temporary accommodation in student flats.

Victoria University students wishing to sublet their flats or requiring help in filling vacancies either on a temporary or permanent basis, should advise the Accommodation Officer of their requirements as soon as possible. Students from other universities planning to work in Wellington naturally want to finalise their accommodation well in advance of their arrival in Wellington; sometimes the acceptance of vacation work in Wellington depends on whether satisfactory digs can be arranged. Nearly all requests for accommodation ask for a fiat in the central city area, close to the Railway Station and rent as cheap as possible so savings can be made from vacation earnings.

The Accommodation Office is at 6 Kelburn Parade.

Summer Vacation Employment for Students

For the last two years students have experienced difficulty finding summer vacation jobs. The latest Department of Labour's statistics show that the number of people currently unemployed or on special work is larger than at this time last year so that it is likely that students will find vacation jobs are in short supply this coming summer.

Many students need a job over the summer months in order to save money to meet next year's living expenses. The tertiary bursary is fixed on the assumption that students will be able to save a substantial sum from their vacations earnings to help support themselves during the following academic year.

Drawing an unemployment office

The Careers Advisory Service invites employers who are planning to take on students as temporary workers over the coming summer months to let the Service have details of the number of vacancies, duties, hours of work and rates of pay by 25 October, 1977 or as soon after this date as is practical as some students will finish their examinations by 11 November.

The University would be grateful if those employers who have not previously employed students over the summer or who are not planning to do so this year because of the economic situation, could re-examine their staffing requirements to see if some students could be employed during the vacation.

If you can employ students over the summer please telephone or write to Careers Advisory Service with the details preferably by 25 October, 1977 or as soon after is as practical. The address is:

Careers Advisory Service, Victoria University of Wellington,Private Bag,Wellington.Telephone: 728 150 or 721 000 ext. 856.

Your assistance is greatly appreciated by both students and the University.

Vacation Work, Christmas 1977

Look Now Earn Later

We expect the coming Christmas vacation period to be a particularly difficult one for vacation work, certainly more difficult than last year (and last year was bad) as the unemployment and special work statistics show more people are out of work than at this time last year.

If you are counting on a well paid holiday job to raise funds for study next year, we think it will be essential for you to do some early planning. We also think you could take some early action, and we suggest you do the following:
1.Contact the employer who gave you a job last year. Do it soon. He might be able to fix a date for you to start work there again. But, if you can't do this, or if he has no jobs—
2.If you are not able to find a job, when your last examination has finished, go to the Department of Labour (District Office, Tory St) and register for work. What will happen then is that—
a)They will interview you, and prepare a registration card.
b)They will ask for your student I.D. (in the past they have had some problems with fake students).
c)They will stamp your registration card with the date on which you reported to them.
d)They will send you on to the Social Welfare Department to fill in more forms.
3.The regulations require you to prove that you are looking for work, by collecting signatures of employers who could not give you a job. The Department of Labour will—
a)Try to get you a regular vacation job.
b)Send you to the Careers Advisory Board, 6 Kelburn Parade, to look for work through the Vacation Work Service there.
c)try to place you on relief work.
4.This procedure will get you work, but if you fail—
a)You will at least have the written evidence to show you tried.
b)You will be paid an unemployment benefit, after a short delay.
c)The benefit will be paid from the date you registered with the Department of Labour.
5.There will be a limited number of vacation jobs abailable from the Careers Advisory Board office, 6 Kelburn Parade, from about the 20th of October

I. H. Boyd,

Director of Student Welfare Services.
