Political Journalism in New Zealand: A Special Seminar

The Wellington Branch of the New Zealand Political Studies Association and the Victoria University Political Science Society are jointly planning a two day seminar on political journalism in New Zealand to be held on November 19 -20 at Victoria University of Wellington. The seminar is open to the public and a pre-registration form is enclosed.

The purpose of this seminar is two fold: to consider the present state of the profession, and to discuss concrete proposals for change. Prominent print and broadcasting journalists have been invited to attend as well as academics involved in journalism training.

Discussions will be held on the following topics:
  • Recruitment and training of political journalists
  • Obstacles to furthering investigative journalism in New Zealand.
  • Proposals for action including: establishment of a journalism review publication; establishment of a fund for investigative journalism
  • Alternative news publications in New Zealand
  • The Parliamentary Press Gallery
  • Newspaper journalism
  • Broadcasting journalism
  • Political columnists
  • Political editorials and editorial leadership

Pre-registrants will receive copies of background papers.
