Studentsays
The Salient Student says team went out today in an attempt to gauge student feeling concerning the SIS Amendment Bill. Opinion was unanimously against the legislation with all spoken to prepared to help, to some extent in a campaign against it. The questions asked were :
1)
|
Are you aware of the provisions contained within the SIS Amendment Bill?
|
2)
|
Do you approve or disapprove of them?
|
3)
|
Would you be prepared to involve yourself in actively opposing the legislation?
|
[unclear: Teresa] Wegrzyn
1)
| Yes. |
2)
|
I strongly disapprove because I don't want to see it finishing like the CIA. New Zealand is too small to need that sort of thing and it's too [unclear: totalitirian.]
|
3)
| If the Studass would pay the fines of $1,000 I'd be quite prepared to. |
Paul May
1)
| I'm not up on the details but I know most of them. |
2)
| I disapprove. It's against our constitutional freedoms and our right to privacy. |
3)
| I'd help in a campaign but I don't Know how far I'd go. |
Jan McCartney
1)
| Yes. |
2)
| I disapprove because even if buggings etc. are happening now, they shouldn't continue. The Prime Minister should not be the man to issue warrants as he has already proved himself to be biased and the control will end up being used as yet another political weapon. |
3)
| Yes. |
Gerard Van Boheman
1)
| Only roughly. |
2)
| I'm bit wary of some because there's too much scope for executive action without sufficient control. |
3)
| To a certain extent. |
Helen Gambrill
1)
| Vaguely. |
2)
| 1 disapprove. There should be more information available on what the SIS are doing. |
3)
| Yes. |
