Allegations of forgery

Allegations of forgery

Dear David,

During your unfortunate illness, a trend has become apparent which reflects badly on the paper It began when you were here really, with the publication of those letters by Bruce Robinson, with Patrick Mulrennan's signature forged on them. Then, a little while ago there was the one about me, signed only by an alleged member of the Karate Club, and saying they were going to do all sorts of things as they were unhappy with me. Well, as it wasn't signed, I couldn't ask the person what precisely was wrong, so I talked it over with some officers of the club, with whom I have good working relations and guess what ? Yep, somebody else probably forged that one too. Then, a couple of weeks ago there were a couple, claiming and counter claiming to be signed by Peter Callincos. And, last week, they realised a new level of puerility with the valuable information that I have a part time job ! Also, that I and other members of the Executive are all out of touch with students. Well, as it wasn't signed, (sic—ED) I couldn't go and see this person to explain how to get bold of one of these honorariums. Another one claimed to be from some Canterbury student on Easter Tournaments. Now this one was really odd, because in my experience of nine tournaments over five years, this has never happened before, or anything remotely like it. Most students don't care, and the others wait until the Controllers Report is circulated to the Sports Officers, along with the Bill. They certainly would never ask Salient for that sort of Information. Well, as it wasn't signed, I couldn't send them the figures that are in, so I guess they'll have to wait along with the others.

Then, there was another one asking some pretty strong rhetorical questions from quite a well informed, so called first year student. At last this one signed, and I thought I could contact him and discuss some of his problems. Imagine my suprise when I discovered that there is not even a student of that name registered as being at this university. His claim that he paid $37 is certainly not verified by any receipt in the university register at all !

Once again, I fear the pages of Salient are being used to take the students for a ride.

Actually David, one of the members of the Salient staff claimed that someone in Salient itself had written them, but of course this person wouldn't commit himself on paper !

I Just thought I'd point thes things out, as the letters are really one of the best parts of Salient and it would be a real shame to have them ruined by more letters of such dubious origin as these and forgeries and the like. Really, I think if anyone has something to say, they should have the guts to sign their name to it.

Yours sincerely,

Peter Thrush.

(Letters to the editor are received through the three official channels. I print all letters that come through those channels unless they are liablous etc. As far as I know, none of the letters you refer to were written by any Salient staff member. Your [unclear: second] letter has been rejected because of liable—Ed).
