Library Cutbacks Survey

Library Cutbacks Survey

As you are probably aware (especially if you used to study on Friday nights) the library has recently suffered cuts in its services i.e. Friday nights early closure at 6p.m. and early closing during the May and August vacations at 6p.m. The reasoning behind these cuts is the lack of finance available to the library. Thus the library was asked to look at its services and see where expenses could be trimmed. The money saved on services will be allocated to the budgetry allowance on books, which unfortunately has also been depleted in recent years.

However the Students Association feels that robbing one area of the library to build up depleted resources in another area is totally unacceptable. We feel that the library should be a priority as far as University spending is concerned. This university spends less per enrolled student on library resources and staff than either Otago, Canterbury or Auckland. Cuts in library hours have an adverse effect on study.

In order to ascertain student opinion the Students Association is putting out a questionnaire and petition to illustrate the need for the re-introduction of the hours cut. Thus we would urge you to fill in the questionnaire and sign the petition. The results will be presented at the next library committee meeting on April 19.

This survey has been instigated on behalf of the library and the Students Association to gain some insight into the effects of the library cutbacks.
