VUWSA Film Preview: 'Savage Innocents', Memorial

VUWSA Film Preview: 'Savage Innocents', Memorial

Arranged by the French Department in Cooperation with the VUWSA Films Division.

Savage Innocents, starring Anthony Quinn and Yoko Tani, is set in the Arctic wastes of Northern Canada. It centres on the culture clash between Eskimos and Europeans.

The action starts with a missionary searching for converts, who is killed by an Eskimo, Inuk in a fit of rage. Inuk then flees into the snowstorms, pursued by two soldiers, both of whom fall victim to the northern ice.

Nursing one soldier back to health, Inuk ignores his advice to stay in the wastes, and ressolves to return to the western justice.

The plot could thus easily become trite imperialist European vs courageous Eskimo. Yet the director's skill and the acting ability of Anthony Quinn and Yoko Tani save it from this fate.

Savage Innocents comes across as a conflict between men, between cultures and above all against the environment.

(p.s.: if you're not interested in all this ethnic rubbish, there's plenty of blood guts and sex - go see it anyway).
