Salient. Victoria University students' Newspaper. Volume Number 39, Issue 7. April 12 [1976]

[subsection]

How often have you asked yourself - what am I doing this for? Or why am I writing the fourth essay in two weeks, or that 2,000 word assignment counting for 40% of the final grade, or the 'rush-job' essay which doesn't count anyway?

Because these questions remain unanswered, disillusioned students willy-nilly subject themselves to the frustrating and archaic forms of assessment which our University insists on perpetuating.

You don't have to be long at university to realise that assessment is not used primarily for the student as an aid in location of her/his particular strengths and weaknesses, but rather for the purposes of stratification in society.

Education becomes a race to win a place at a high level of the social pile. Conformity rather than creativity becomes the norm.

Students will not be doing thier own private study or group work, like sheep they simultaneously wade through the same sheep dip.
