Mr Shand told the audience the City Council would like to keep the existing cars, and he personally did not want to see those 'hideous steel cars'.

He said the Council had no alternative but to take the trailers off when ordered to do so some eighteen months ago and that at present the Council is taking steps to meet the Ministry of Works requirements.

When questioned about the long period of time taken so far to reinstate the trailers, Mr Shand placed the blame on the consultant engineer who took months it seems to draw up plans for the new braking system.
