[Introduction]

The City Council will have to replace the present cable car system within 8-10 years, said Mr David Shand (City Councillor and a member of the Transport Committee) at last Tuesday's forum on the future of the cable car.

The modifications at present being carried (or is it 'dragged') out by the Council, on orders given by the Ministry of Works engineer, are not a longterm solution as many people believed but are only a temporary upgrading measure.

A Swiss engineer (brought to Wellington at a cost of $5000) has presented a report to the Transport Committee for their consideration.

It outlines five alternatives to the present system, all of which involve scrapping the existing tramcars.

The report will not be made public, No satisfactory reasons have been given for this decision.

The cost? Minimum is eighty to ninety thousand dollars.
