Voting for your Rep

At the Student Representative Council on 7 April a vast plethora of student reps will be elected / volunteered / dragged in. They will represent students on a wide variety of university committees.

The first position is one held over from the last SRC: Welfare Officer. This officer is responsible for looking after SRC policy in welfare areas - such things as health services, cost of living, building up involvement have been suggested for this year. The officer will hopefully enthuse people into a Welfare Committee, which will have some $50 to spend on campaigns this year.

Another elected position not yet filled is the fourth student rep on Catering Sub Committee.

So; for the new list:

Professorial Board

There are three student reps on Prof Board, which is the highest academic debating area in the Univesity. Prof Board receives reports, debates assessment, suggests lines of development and (hopefully rarely) has disciplinary functions. Its recommendations to Council (the supreme decision-making body of the University) are very rarely rejected.

There are three reps, two having two year terms and one one-year term. As Pat Martin, the 1975-76 rep has resigned, we have three reps to elect.

The Faculties

These are the academic forums below Prof Board. They discuss problems particular to various subject in the faculties: Arts; Languages and Literature (which meet together); Science; Commerce and Administration; Law; and Architecture. The last two elect student reps from their own members - the other have reps from SRC:
Arts 4 students, two elected each year for two year terms. Two are needed for 1976-7.
Languages & Literature Like Arts, four students, two each year for two year terms. Two are needed for 1976-7.
Commerce & Administration. 5 students, elected each year.
Science 4 students (including at least one woman, and one graduate)

Faculty Committees

The Faculties from time to time set up Committees to study various things et work load, assessment and normally a couple of student reps, are dragged into these.

Subject Committess

These are where the basic orientation of Departments are worked out, along with staffing, teaching etc. There is one for each subject, and many welcome students who are interested enough to come along to see what happens. There is no SRC election for these.

The Duties of Reps.

These are summarised at the start of the SRC Policy Guide (available from the Students' Association office). Briefly, reps have to work for students, bringing up points students bring to them, and generally ensuring the best deal possible. Many of the above reps are also on Education Committee (provided over by the Education officer) which discusses campaigns on assessment, work loads etc.

If you're interested in any of the above committees, but not quite sure what the job entails, please see myself or come along to the SRC on Wednesday to hear all about it.
