More Films for VIC

More Films for VIC

The VUWSA Films Division has booked another 17 films for screening on campus this year, and is hopeful of putting on even more screenings.

The Films Controller, Anthony Ward relaxing after a strenuous trip to Auckland, told Salient the reasons for this move. He said the basic reason was the high support shown by students this year.

'Last year attendances averaged some 50 per screening. So far this year we have averaged around 125. It is obvious students would like to see more films'

In previous years the films on this campus have been organised by Unicine Ltd, the supplier of films for four other University campuses. There has been considerable acrimony between Unicine and NZUSA in recent times, with Students Arts Council last year deciding they would investiage the possibility of a national tertiary film circuit. Unicine had proposed extending its services to other tertiary campuses, but has not so far done this.

The dispute between NZUSA and Unicine spread to Victoria when the Executive decided in 1974 to transfer Victoria's membership of Unicine from the Union to the Students' Association. This withdrawal of Vic Union was agreed to by Unicine early last year, but the Studass application for membership was not approved.

'Consequently we had to go out on our own for films this year' said Anthony Ward. 'As we made a small loss last year, we decided to move cautiously to start with, and only book one film a week, with extras for orientation and capping. However, because of the large attendances at the first films we felt that increasing the number was justified. We are watching with interest the reaction this will get'.

There have been criticisms of the way films are run this year - particularly the 2.15pm start and the increase of price to 70cents. The price increase, Anthony points out, was due to the higher prices we have to pay for films after withdrawing from Unicine, which has larger buying power. Besides, Unicine has itself put prices up to 70 cents this year.

At times, in earlier years evening screening have been tried but did not do well. They are more costly to put on, because of overtime and extra cleaning charges, and were not sufficiently popular. However, because of the number of people who have expressed on interest in evening films, the bulk of the new films will be shown from 5 - 7pm.

We are confident that this improvement in the service offered to students will be popular. We will also be watching this reaction closely. Prices will be kept the same (at 70 cents) and people who have the years ticket will be able to attend all the extra screening without further cost. We have some of the years tickets left, and urge people to get in early if they want to see many of the new films'.

The films programme for the rest of the year is (with * denoting a new film).
